THE PRESENT AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL OF SIGNALS IN URBAN AREAS UTILIZES PRE-ESTABLISHED FIXED COORDINATION PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAMS GIVE SATISFACTORY RESULTS BUT HAVE TWO DISADVANTAGES: - THEY DO NOT REACT SATISFACTORILY TO THE DISTURBANCES AND RANDOM VARIATIONS IN TRAFFIC, - THEY USED TO BE REGULARLY UPDATED AS THE URBAN TRAFFIC EVOLVES. THIS RESEARCH ATTEMPTS TO DEVELOP REAL-TIME TRAFFIC CONTROL PROGRAMS WITHOUT THE ABOVE DISADVANTAGES. THEY WOULD TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE POSSIBILITIES OFFERED BY THE MICROPROCESSORS INSTALLED IN SIGNAL CONTROL CUPBOARDS. |
