THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO OBTAIN A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBGRADES SUJECTED TO MOVING LOADS. THE PROPERTIES OF THE SUBGRADE, WHICH ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN MOST PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODS, ARE VERY OFTEN THE RESULTS OF FAILURE TESTS (EXAMPLE: CBR INDEX) OR OF LARGE DEFORMATION TESTS (EXAMPLE: PLATE BEARING TEST). IF THE REPETITION OF LOADS AND THE SMALL STRESSES INDUCED IN THE SUBGRADE BY TRAFFIC ON RIGID OR SEMI-RIGID PAVEMENTS ARE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, THE VALIDITY OF THE ABOVE CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE QUESTIONED. IT IS ENVISAGED TO: SUMMARIZE THE GEOTECHNICAL TESTS USUALLY EMPLOYED; CONDUCT A BIBLIOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE STRESS/STRAIN DEFORMATIONS IN SOILS SUBJECTED TO REPETITIVE LOADING. |
