摘要: THE MARSHALL METHOD IS USED IN MANY COUNTRIES TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOUR OF ROADS IN USE, AND CRITERIA FOR THE DESIGN OF THE MIX ARE ESTABLISHED MORE OR LESS EMPIRICALLY. THE VOIDS CONTENT OF THE MARSHALL SAMPLE AND THE VALUES OF STABILITY AND FLOW DERIVED FROM THE FRACTURE STATE DO NOT HOWEVER PROVIDE ACCURATE INFORMATION ON THE MODIFICATION OF THE VOIDS CONTENT UNDER TRAFFIC DURING SUMMER TEMPERATURES, OR ON BEHAVIOUR IN USE. EXTENSIVE STUDIES WITH THE GYRATOR RESULTED IN LABORATORY COMPACTION BETTER ADAPTED TO CONDITIONS ON THE ROAD. BY MEANS OF THE GYRATOR IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE MODIFICATION OF THE VOIDS IN THE SAMPLE AND THE CHANGE IN THE RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION UNDER SHEAR FORCES AND VERTICAL LOADING. HOWEVER, CHARACTERISTIC VALUES OBTAINED WITH BOTH THESE METHODS BEAR NO DIRECT RELATION TO THE BEHAVIOUR IN USE OF THE MIXTURES TESTED. IN ORDER TO REMEDY THIS COMPARATIVE TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT ON MIXTURES FROM EXISTING DEFORMED AND UNDEFORMED PAVEMENTS.
