A fire hazard assessment of proposed shipboard plastic waste processing systems was conducted. The evaluation included smallscale ignition and heat release rate studies of prototype processed plastic as well as mathematical modeling of expected fire conditions in compartments housing the processor unit and in storage of processed plastic. An evaluation of the impact of detection and automatic sprinkler protection was also conducted. The study concluded that storage of processed plastic was preferred over storage of unprocessed materials, that there was little risk of ignition of plastics caused by the processor, and that any residual risk associated with storage of processed plastic could be eliminated by the provision of an automatic sprinkler system in the compartment housing the processing unit.
