TEN YEARS AGO, celebrating 10 years as president and CEO of the Port of New Orleans, Gary La-Grange delivered his annual "State of the Port" address; a 10-mile stretch of the Lower Mississippi River was closed after a tow lost three barges; and Talen's Marine was repowering its fleet with Mitsubishi engines. TWENTY YEARS AGO, a four barge tow struck the Queen Isabella Causeway near Port Isabel, Texas, causing its collapse; port security was tightened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks; and the former Donald B, re-christened the Barbara H, was made into a museum and named a National Historic Landmark.THIRTY YEARS AGO, a new marine ways system was inaugurated at Dakota Barge Service in St. Paul, Minn.; Mobil Oil Corporation introduced the first hydraulic fluid based on vegetable oil; and Quality Shipyards Inc. delivered the 3,200 hp. mv. City of Pittsburgh to Ashland Oil Inc. after its stern was rebuilt. |
