TEN YEARS AGO, the Grafton (Ill.) Ferry went out of business, blaming the Corps of Engineers for not keeping up with dredging on its route; Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz was named superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy; and Buck Shell, a leader in the development of the Arkansas Waterway, died in Fort Smith, Ark. TWENTY YEARS AGO, a lift-gate aceident closed the main chamber of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam at Mile 200 of the Upper Mississippi River; the federal government released its plan to save salmon on the lower Snake River; and Seacor Smit Inc. of Houston, Texas, acquired St. Louis-based SCF Corporation, which owned and operated 43 inland river barges. THIRTY YEARS AGO, the Coast Guard placed a new buoy tender, the Kankakee, into service at Memphis, Tenn.; Ingram Barge Company bought Georgia Transporters Inc. of Panama City, Fla.; and Parker Towing Company of Tuscaloosa, Ala., bought the mv. Mary Weathers from Bunge Towing and changed its name to the Gilbert Taylor. |
