In 1987, an Army Apache helicopter crashed during a training mission at Fort Rucker, Alabama, resulting in fatal injuries to the rear seat pilot and survivable injuries to the front seat copilot. Figure 1 shows the seating configuration of the two pilots. U.S. Army Safety Center (USASC) investigators at Fort Rucker, Alabama, reported the aircraft damage assessment and aircrew member injuries. U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) researchers at Fort Rucker, Alabama, concurrently examined the helmets, restraint systems, and crashworthy seats.
