Proper use of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offers the promise of reducing motor vehicle crashes and fatalities, and is rapidly being introduced into the U.S. vehicle fleet. ADAS features, however, can be confusing to drivers, include a wide variance of terminology, and have many differences in design and functionality. ADAS technology is not like previous safety enhancements where a simple message covers direction to drivers. ADAS requires new models for messaging that accommodates the variations and new learning methods for the more complex technologies. With these technological advancements meant to improve safety, concerns about driver distraction and confusion have surfaced. The National Roadway Safety Strategy has adopted Vision Zero and is based in the Safe System Approach, which identifies Safer Vehicles as one of five pillars. As these technologies continue to advance and permeate the vehicle fleet, it is critical to ensure all roadway users understand how the systems work and how to safely use them. There is no standard educational curriculum about ADAS for novice drivers, older drivers, rental car customers, vehicle dealerships, business fleet operators, or any person that may come into contact with such systems. Non-motorists are also a target population as systems may affect the conspicuity of vehicles in the roadway environment.
The objective of this research is to characterize the current state of knowledge related to ADAS, identify populations in need of education on the matter, and recommend methods of delivery for that education. The desired outcomes of this research would include a scan of educational opportunities currently in practice and identify best practices. It would also include a set of target populations and how best to bring information about ADAS to their attention and understanding. |
