摘要: To assess the viability of using repaired W/WS, some used B-52 W/WS were procured, repaired, and then tested. The repair costs provide the data for the cost benefit analysis. The test results provide the technical evaluation data. The test results indicate that repaired W/WS are not equal to new WIWS. Many of the repaired W/WS still contain defects that would not pass an OEM quality assurance inspection. The bird impact test results are quite clear the new W/WS outperform either repaired or unrepaired W/WS, with one repaired W/WS failing catastrophically. The direct cost of repaired W/WS is less than half the cost of new W/WS. Thus, money can be saved by using repaired W/WS. Poor performance of the repaired W/WS in the bird impact tests makes it difficult to recommend the use of repaired B-52 W/WS. Because the WJWS that were tested came off of retired aircraft and were not removed for cause, there is a concern for active B-52 W/WS.
