摘要: Solid and corrugated fiberboard is available in a range of grades and finishes. This investigation centered on the potential use of less expensive, more available, and more environmental friendly fiberboard in the construction of boxes used for the packing of Military rations. Meal, Ready to Eat (MRE) rations were used for this investigation. Boxes were constructed from different fiberboards and then packed with rations. These boxes were then subjected to testing in accordance with ASTM 4169-96: Standard Practice for Performance Testing of Shipping Containers and Systems. Distribution Cycle 18 (Government Shipments) and Assurance Level 1 (highest intensity/most severe) were selected as test parameters. Evaluation of the test results leads to the recommendation that the use of solid fiberboard be discontinued as corrugated fiberboard has been proven acceptable for the packing of all MREs. It is also recommended that a regular slotted container (RSC) box design with inner fiberboard inserts be adopted for packing of MREs. A redesign of the MRE box to accommodate more meals, achieving an optimum container weight with resultant cost savings, should also be considered.
