This final report documents the tests results on the Airport Movement Area Safety System (AMASS) Air Traffic (AT) Operational Testing conducted at Atlanta, GA and Detroit, MI International Airports. The purpose of the AMASS Operational Test (OT) was to verify the Critical Operational Issues (COT). The AMASS is a runway collision alert system that provides tower air traffic controllers with automated conflict warnings and alerts to reduce the risks of runway collisions. The AMASS system provides tower controllers with both aural and visual alerts. The AMASS system receives raw video from the Airport Surface Detection Equipment-3 (ASDE-3) and airborne approach targets from the Terminal Automation Interface Unit (TAIU). The TAIU receives target data from the Surveillance Communications Interface Processor (SCIP) and aircraft tag data from the Automated Radar Tracking System (ARTS). It tracks this data and sends appropriate position, vector, and a predicted approach runway to AMASS. Targets are then processed by the AMASS Safety Logic to determine if any targets have the potential to create a hazardous situation. The Operational Testing on the AMASS COTs questions has been evaluated/assessed, resulting in no high issues. The Airway Facilities (AF)/AT OT Test Team members felt that the AMASS system has shown dramatic improvements and is currently operationally ready. |
