Network-centric railroading and intelligent railroad systems represent a" unified theory of railroading" in which positioning systems, sensors, computers, advanced mathematical methods, and digital communications are used to collect, process, and disseminate information to improve the safety, security, and operational effectiveness of railroads. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for highways and mass transit are based on the same technologies, as are the National Airspace System and maritime vessel tracking systems. Major parcel delivery companies, pipeline operators, law enforcement, and emergency response services also use these technologies. Military services utilize these technologies for network-centric warfare; railroads will use them for network-centric railroading. Intelligent railroad systems can either be implemented as independent systems, in which case their benefits will be limited, or they can be implemented as integrated, networked systems, in which case the benefits will be compounded. The railroad industry is urged to consider adopting an integrated approach when implementing these systems to achieve network-centric railroading. |
