Road accidents, being a global phenomenon, have caused multifaceted injuries and losses to persons and properties. Globally, it is a major cause of death and injuries in spite of various international attempts to mitigate it. In India, in 2019, as per Road Accidents in India, 2019 the total number of reported road accidents was 4,49,002 causing deaths (1,51,113) and injuries (4,51,361), out of which 29,354 (19.4% of total deaths) deaths were caused only in hit and run motor accidents category. This is the condition when the whole world reaffirmed their strong commitment for achieving the goals of reducing road accident related deaths by at least 50% by 2030 in the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Stockholm, Sweden on 19 and 20 February, 2020.
In light of above facts, the present paper critically analyses the provisions relating to compensation in hit and run motor accidents in addition to explaining the current scenario of such cases. |
