Roadway lighting is currently obtained from an external energy source. This consumable energy source is costly, increases the environmental footprint, and poses a safety risk to travelers in the event of a power outage. The proposed research will investigate different viable technologies (e.g.-piezoelectric, micro-wind harvesters, etc.) available to convert the kinetic energy from the movement of vehicles (e.g.-vibrational) into usable electrical energy. The focus will be on available technology and the feasibility of implementing the technologies, long term maintenance, and overall cost-benefit.
The goal for this project is to identify viable technologies of capturing and converting the kinetic energy of vehicle and traffic movement on the roadway so that energy is captured to power assets such as roadway lighting and traffic signals. |
