The most accurate determination of seismic site class is achieved with in
situ measurement of shear wave velocities. A seismic cone penetration test with pore water
pressure measurement (SCPTu) can perform all of the functions of the CPTu, but has added
capability to measure shear wave velocity at discrete depths. Shear wave velocities are not only
useful for accurate determination of seismic site class, they can also be used to estimate other soil
properties such as the small strain shear modulus (Gvo). The objectives of this research project are: (1) To demonstrate the applicability of various CPT, CPTu, SCPTu correlations to a broad range of
Oklahoma soils. (2) To develop Oklahoma specific correlations based on laboratory and CPT, CPTu
and SCPTu data collected. (3) To develop recommendations for addressing the impact of partial
saturation on CPT, CPTu and SCPTu results and estimated soil properties. (4) To produce a
comprehensive set of guidelines in a manual of practice for application of CPT, CPTu and SCPTu
for geotechnical engineers in Oklahoma. |
