The United States aging transportation infrastructure and workforce has created a high demand for skilled, diverse and multi-disciplinary professionals that can develop new solutions to the nations transportation problems. Reaching out to middle and high school students about exciting career opportunities within the broad field of transportation is one branch of workforce development that can address these needs. Improving multimodal transportation transfers and demand-responsive needs can increase the appeal of mass transit and more efficiently move people. This project seeks to build awareness and interest in transportation career options by sharing with local youth the positive impacts of transportation in the mobility, safety and economic opportunity of everyone. Participation in hands-on, transportation-themed activities is one way to engage youth and encourage a future supply of transportation professionals.
It is the intent of this study to conduct at least six outreach sessions and host a half-day workshop for local middle and high school students with hands-on, multimodal transportation themed activities. The larger goals these activities intend to address are engaging youth to provide a future supply of transportation professionals, and increasing awareness of the advantages of multimodal transportation, including transit, bicycle, ride-share, and personal vehicles. |
