In northern districts in Texas, TxDOT frequently loses millions of dollars worth of RPMs due to snow plowing. TxDOT not only has to spend the money to place them back after winter, but there is a period of time where the road is without the added safety benefit of the RPMs. Research is needed to look for ways to get a longer life out of the RPMs in the northern districts. In addition, both thermoplastic and paint pavement markings have significantly reduced life cycles when exposed to snowplows.
Project objectives are to: [1.] Determine possible ways to inset RPMs into the milled area of centerline rumble strips, which would keep them from being plowed off during winter weather operations. [2.] Evaluate different RPMs and rumble strip mill patterns to determine appropriate reflective levels, as compared to the current use of RPMs. [3.] Conduct an outreach to vendors to determine industry capabilities, and how these products can benefit Texas. [4.] Conduct lab demos with snowplows and various striping products to test the effectiveness of vendor solutions or other product ideas they may develop. [5.] Perform a cost-benefit analysis, considering life cycle of various products versus material and installation costs. |
