The aviation industry is continuing to evolve and there is no readily available information to gauge the current financial and operational viability of the FBO industry. In the 1980s an estimated 10,000 FBO locations served a robust aviation industry. Most of the FBOs were privately owned and/or operated, many by individual families. Today there are approximately 3,500 FBOs at obligated airports varied by ownership and operation. Of these, it is estimated that 47% are publicly owned and operated by airports. This change is explained by multiple factors such as consolidation, competition, fleet mix, and demographic trends. Also impactful, information availability has changed flight planning for pilots and dispatchers. The industry and the associated data collection efforts have not adjusted to reflect this new reality. The result is that airport operators tend to fly solo on many FBO management and operational decisions.
The purpose of this study is to provide a quantitative snapshot of the FBO industry subsector and to provide a roadmap/table of data resources available for additional analysis. The primary audience for this data set are airport and FBO operators.
Data about FBOs and services are available through many diverse datasets. There are companies that collect and present data, but much of this information is provided by subscription or paid service. As such, many airports and small FBOs do not have the data that may be useful to understanding their industry and making informed decisions. The expected benefit of a public compilation is to present a current industry baseline, and create awareness of trends over time that could affect FBO management decisions and viability. |
