Alternative fuel buses (hybrid-electric, battery-electric, compressed
natural gas, etc.) have great potential to reduce lifecycle energy use and
criteria pollutant emissions from urban and rural transit fleets. However,
market penetration of alternative fuel transit buses in the U.S. is
currently below 50%. The goal of this study is to develop an analytical
framework to automatically generate an optimal transit agency bus fleet
replacement plan across all alternative fuel options, based upon a
comprehensive assessment of agency routes and on-road operating
conditions. The framework will integrate the Georgia Tech Transit
Simulator and Fuel and Emissions Calculator (FEC), employ real-world
operating conditions and eco-transit management of field operations.
The research will include a complete assessment of charging strategies
for specific vehicle designs, routes, and on-road operations must be
included in optimization modeling.
This project will help transit agencies obtain a reasonable estimation of
fuel-savings and identify the most economically-efficient fleet purchase
and vehicle-route assignments for mixed fleets for a twenty-year vehicle
