Pile driving setup happens within the soil. It is a soil structure interaction. It is a time dependent increase in pile capacity, meaning the piles have higher capacity to take more load. Pile driving setup is rarely considered in Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT's) current standard driven friction pile design procedures, as it is not easily quantified or predicted. If substantial pile driving losses are encountered in construction, ODOT often halts pile driving for one to two weeks to determine if setup can be counted on to make up the loss. This negatively affects the construction schedule, and unforeseen costs are incurred when additional length of pile needs fabricated. This research will be conducted in two phases. The goal of Phase 1 is to develop a prediction methodology for the magnitude of setup or driving loss that can be anticipated during construction in order to account for it in design. Phase 2 involves field implementation and evaluation of the recommended solutions. Phase 2 is contingent upon the successful completion of Phase 1 and the written authorization of the ODOT Research Section. |
