This project seeks to reduce access to roads for imperiled turtles and other small wildlife, thereby promoting conservation and improving the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Small animal exclusion fencing is intended to redirect turtles and other animals to existing through-road infrastructure (bridges and culverts), but the effectiveness of these plans remains untested. In this project, the Minnesota Zoo (MnZOO) will assess these plans by 1) Identifying study sites based on target species and input from road authorities; 2) installing a selection of designs from the draft plan specifications; 3) monitoring sites pre- and post-installation to evaluate the effects on target species and other wildlife; 4) evaluating fencing costs and durability and quantifying benefits to wildlife; and 5) proposing revisions to draft plans to improve effectiveness in mitigating road mortality. This project will complement existing research conducted by Minnesota DNR and MnZOO. |
