The objective of this study is to improve understanding of the effectiveness of driver education about vehicle speeds, laws, and the risks of speeding behavior in improving driver knowledge and changing driver attitudes and behaviors, including its effectiveness in reducing post-education speeding recidivism. Recent research has indicated that many drivers feel they lack sufficient knowledge about speeding and would like more information about it, including more information on topics such as stopping distances, laws, and the risks involved. This project will first establish an agreement with a State to recruit drivers to participate in the study. The sample would include licensed drivers with at least one speeding citation in the past three years and stratified by age and gender. Participants' vehicles will be outfitted with a passive device to record their driving speeds with speeds being matched to speed limits on roads driven throughout the duration of the study. Participants will complete an intake questionnaire at the time of the device installation that will cover basic driving knowledge, knowledge on speeding, speed limits and related laws for their State as well as some basic personality and motivational measures related to speeding in previous studies. After collecting baseline driving data, participants will receive educational materials on speeds and speeding with a brief assessment at the end of the delivery on what were learned. Participants will continue to drive as we collect driving speeds data for several weeks after the educational material has been presented. A final questionnaire will be administered when the speed measurement devices are being removed from the vehicles at the end of the field period along with a debriefing. Outcome measures will include pre/post education knowledge of speeding-related information and driving behavior (speeding). |
