摘要：	The State of Kansas is vital to the movement of freight goods and services by trucks with easy directional access with I-70 and I-35 as well as key U.S. and state routes. Overweight / oversize loads are becoming more frequent as industries such as wind energy and agriculture see the need to move larger items down the roadway. Understanding the commonality of the routes these large loads travel can have significant safety advantages for both the trucking companies charged to deliver these goods, as well as passenger cars (and all other vehicle types) who share the same roadway, whether it is a state highway, U.S. route or interstate. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has automated the permitting and routing process through a web portal called the Kansas Truck Routing and Intelligent Permitting System (K-TRIPS). KTRIPS is an online service provided by KDOT which allows motor carriers to create and maintain their routes and route permits for oversized, overweight and temporary registration travel within the state of Kansas. The website requires users to input and maintain information regarding their company, truck inventory, and permit types. Through this website companies can apply for a permit and save routes which requires information about the origin and destination of the trip. Companies provide the details of the loaded vehicles and the types of the load for the route. If the loaded weight of the vehicles exceeds legal limit, the company needs to provide appropriate axle information for the specific vehicle. The database has been active since 2014 and viable data can be extracted and investigated. Overweight and oversized trucks in Kansas represent only a small percentage of the total number of trucks that travel within and through the State. However, their movement within the state sometimes creates a challenge for trucking companies to find appropriate routes to safely accommodate these vehicles while interacting with normal traffic conditions. The primary objective of this research study includes the following: 1) Analyze the KTRIPS database to clearly understand the percentage of oversized / overweight trips as a portion of the total truck trips in Kansas. 2) Determine what commodities are applying frequently for permits and if there are common routes being taken by a certain type of truck or commodity. 3) Investigate common routes to determine if there are any roadway geometry hazards, a higher percentage of crashes, or potential for future roadway upgrades.
