Risk Assessment of Roadside Utility Structures under Vehicular Impacts
项目名称: Risk Assessment of Roadside Utility Structures under Vehicular Impacts
摘要: Roadside structures such as bus shelters and cluster mailboxes are increasingly used in urban areas. These structures raise safety concerns due to the likelihood of being struck by errand vehicles. A safety assessment of such structures is needed to determine the potential risk of occupant in the impacting vehicles and pedestrians near such structures. The main objective of the proposed research is to evaluate a bus shelter and a cluster mailbox under impacts of Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) compliant vehicles. Finite element modeling and simulations will be employed as the major tool of the investigation. A range of potential occupant injury levels will be determined for a range of impact conditions such as impact locations, impact speed, and impact angles. A crash test dummy will be used in the vehicular crash simulations to assess occupant risk. The damage and structural integrity of the bus shelter and cluster mailbox will also be evaluated. The research will provide North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) engineers the knowledge of potential risks in vehicular crashes involving bus shelters and cluster mailboxes. The research results will also help NCDOT officials in their ability to evaluate and communicate their efforts to enhance transportation safety. The research results will help developing future guidelines regarding the design and installation of roadside structures such as bus shelters and cluster mailboxes.
