The technology portion of the TPEC project has focused on the potential policy implications of self-driving vehicles (SDVs) for its first 3 years. The work produced a white paper the first year, symposium on the topic in the second year, a series of roundtables investigating various impacts in the third year, and results of a task force focused on the potential equity impacts of self-driving vehicles in Minnesota.
One result of the 4th year task force work was the revelation that, compared to emerging visions for deployment of self-driving vehicles in densely-populated urban areas, little work has been done to develop a vision for the optimal deployment of this technology(ies) in low-density suburbs, smaller cities and towns, and rural areas. In the coming year, work in this area will take advantage of the outreach and education activities listed in Task 4 to receive input from local elected officials and staff in Greater Minnesota that can be used as inputs towards developing such a vision.
In addition, the research team will monitor other developments in transportation technologies, and consider white papers as appropriate. |
