Self-healing microcapsules as concrete aggregates for corrosion inhibition in reinforced concrete
项目名称: Self-healing microcapsules as concrete aggregates for corrosion inhibition in reinforced concrete
摘要: Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures are vital to the USs infrastructure due to their high durability and superior mechanic performance when used as prime materials for bridges, superstructures and other civil engineering applications. Unfortunately, RC elements deteriorate rapidly when exposed to aggressive or corrosive environments. The use of self-healing corrosion inhibiting solutions provides a technology capable of influencing surface properties and indirectly the transport properties, the rebar corrosion rate, and the mechanism of reaction at the steel/concrete interface. Single or double walled self-healing microcapsules are materials that can be used to control and mitigate damage evolution processes in electrochemical systems such as reinforced concrete systems. The capsules house an anodic or cathodic corrosion inhibitor agent such as calcium nitrate. The advantage of these microcapsules is that they can be added during the mixing process or following the drying process in concrete structures and work on preventing corrosion with no need for maintenance or repair. This work aims to characterize and develop microcapsules formed through the concrete mixing process. The integration of such materials will enhance the durability and extend the useful life by controlling the corrosion precursors and the corrosion process during the damage evolution process.
