The proposed study will provide important laboratory data on the rheological and mechanistic properties of nanoclay-modified binders. Such data will be important to setting the direction of future studies and eventual special provisions for incorporation of nanoclays in asphalt binder modification. The primary objective of the proposed study is to assess the feasibility of using nanoclays to modify base asphalt binders in the United States. Specifically, the objectives of the proposed study are to: (1) Develop a suitable blending protocol to modify base asphalt binders with nanoclay; and (2) Examine performance properties (rutting, fatigue, and moisture resistance) of nanoclay-modified asphalt binders.
This study will develop tools and materials for longer lasting infrastructure, assess the feasibility of using nanoclays in the Mississippi Delta area, and establish strong collaborative records local paving industries and refineries in the region. The expected benefits of the proposed study are: (a) use inexpensive naturally abundant nanoclays to modify soft asphalt binders, (b) enhance training opportunity for students in the Mississippi Delta region, and (c) build a future workforce. |
