Megaregion (MR) Freight Mobility: Impact of Truck Technologies
项目名称: Megaregion (MR) Freight Mobility: Impact of Truck Technologies
摘要: The costs and benefits of the adoption of new technologies in private sector freight operations in general, and the trucking sector in particular, is the specific focus of this project. A variety of technologies, though initially expensive to develop, test and adopt are presenting transportation plannersespecially those in the highway sectorwith the potential for unprecedented improvements in social benefits. The next decade will see changes in highway efficiency and safety that eclipse all improvements to date. The unacceptable cost of U.S. highway accidents$250 billion in fatalities and $152 billion in serious injuriesand a larger amount of social costs imposed on system users while all accidents are cleared create a reduction in highway system capacity greater than all planned improvements over the five years. The project will identify a range of technologies being tested for fuel and safety efficiencies. It will first identify supported research by U.S. truck, engine, transmission, tire and brake manufacturers and group them into immediate, intermediate and long term adoptions, the latter defined as over 5 years. The impetus created by autonomous vehicles in the auto sector is being replicated in the trucking sector and while a driverless truck is not an immediate prospect in this work, the ability of trucks systems to monitor the highway around the truck and recognize safety signalsspeed limits, bridge height, weather conditions, accidents and the position of all users relative to the truckwill bring a range of social benefits that can be incorporated into highway planning.
