The Statewide Work Zone Information System (SWIS) aims to improve the traffic work-zone monitoring and inspection process through the use of internet of things technologies. The system includes two core technologies. The first technology is the design and development of traffic-control device beacons that are able to communicate the location and state of any work-zone traffic-control assets (e.g., cones, barrels, and arrow boards). The second functionality involves the SWIS server, which collects the beacon information and also acts as digital repository for past, present, and future project traffic-control plans. For active road maintenance projects, the SWIS server lets its users monitor a work zone in real time. It also contains algorithms for detecting non-MUTCD-compliant work-zone setups to assist on work-zone inspections. |
