Inventory of Child Bicycle Education Programs
项目名称: Inventory of Child Bicycle Education Programs
摘要: The research team will create an inventory of bicycle education programs from local, national, and international sources, such as Safe Routes to School, state bicycle coalitions, schools, etc. The team will also work with the Iowa Safe Routes to School director to create a subset inventory, which will include programs currently used within the state of Iowa. The team will then systematically inventory each competency/skill included in each program, approach (community-based, in-school, one DocuSign Envelope ID: 21428E5C-1B30-4198-A254-3F97976A5F83 session, multiple sessions, hands-on practice, knowledge-based, etc.), and review and score completed evaluations (knowledge change, behavior change, crash reductions, feasibility, etc.). The team will also evaluate how each program aligns with developmental aspects (physical, perceptual, and cognitive) that influence child bicycling and traffic navigating proficiency such as motor skills development and vision. Additionally, the team will evaluate program inclusion of considerations of risk-taking and influence of emotions, age differences, and gender differences. These are elements that can make education programs more effective and have been defined within the literature, but the connection to existing programs has not yet been done. This inventory will help to identify deficiencies in existing programs, feasibility of implementation, best programs by target population (e.g., different age groups), and a core set of riding competencies/skills. This education program inventory will provide a foundation for the long term goal to develop a gold standard program, which can be accomplished with further incorporation of Iowa crash, trauma, and naturalistic bicycling data. The team also anticipates that educators will be able to immediately use information from this inventory to guide selection of appropriate education programs and identify key elements they should include in their traffic safety education curricula. The success of this project will be seen in the use of this inventory by educators throughout Iowa and beyond. Successes may also be measured through use of study products by the research team as a piece of the development for a gold standard program. Potential long-term successes include crash, injury, and fatality reduction among bicyclists through improved traffic safety knowledge, skills, and navigation and riding behaviors. Minimal travel will be required to coordinate with the Iowa Safe Routes to School director, who has a home base in Johnson County, as well as potential meetings with the Iowa Board of Education and educators to determine existing programs used throughout the state, and meetings with the advisory committee (located in Iowa City and Des Moines metro areas). Project deliverables will include a report with an inventory of existing bicycle education programs, which will include program rankings and recommendations for best current programs. The team will also develop a peer-reviewed publication and summary that can be delivered to the Iowa Department of Education and educators throughout the state. The following five tasks describe the project, beginning January 2017 and lasting for 12 months: Task 1 - meet quarterly with our advisory committee; Task 2 - create inventory of bicycle education programs; Task 3 - Final report preparation; and Task 4 - Peer-reviewed manuscript and summary preparation and dissemination.
