BRANTARE is a project whose goal is to contribute to reducing noise around airports. The aim is to provide knowledge about the flight operational aspects and effects of approach procedures using glide slope angles steeper than what is normally used by aircrafts on approach to an airport. Knowledge will be obtained if the pilots way to fly means opportunities or constraints to reduce noise in practice, and what opportunities and limitations this implies. Applying a steeper approach angle reduces the impact noise in theory from arriving aircraft since the distance between the noise source and the disturbed area on the ground is increased. Flight operationally, this would mean a change of the glide slope angle, and thus also a different handling of the aircraft's location and motion energy. A changed way of flying can then lead to new patterns of noise generation during the approach. This could compromise the desired effect and even create the opposite effect at certain ground locations. |
