Determination of Steels in Kentucky Bridges |

Many bridges in Kentucky have steel superstructures of unknown composition and strength. Included among these are older bridges nearing the end of their design life and new bridges (especially smaller weathering steel) with unknown composition. There is a need to identify those steels and irons and evaluate their composition/alloy designation and determine their tensile and yield strengths. Several technologies can be used to perform noninvasive field tests on the steels and identify their makeup and
strength. The objectives of this research are to: 1) Develop procedures to identify unknown structural steels and determine their mechanical (tensile) properties, and 2) Validate those procedures and document them for future use in evaluating unknown bridge steels. |
