Determining Constructed Pavement Layer Thicknesses Using Nondestructive Testing
项目名称: Determining Constructed Pavement Layer Thicknesses Using Nondestructive Testing
摘要: Coring is required for density determinations in flexible pavements and for pavement layer thickness determinations for both rigid and flexible pavements. Although this method accurately measures thickness, it is destructive, labor intensive, and time‐consuming. Coring pavements can introduce weak spots in the new pavement that may lead to maintenance issues later, even if the core hole is filled in accordance with accepted practices. Moreover, cores are usually taken only at random locations and may be inadequate to estimate the thickness profile of an entire pavement section. Extracting more cores to adequately determine the thickness profile would unduly damage the pavement, excessively increasing labor costs and time. New technologies permit rapid determination of pavement layer thicknesses without obtaining core samples. The objectives of this research are to: 1) Evaluate nondestructive test methods that can accurately determine thickness without extracting core samples; 2) Examine the use nondestructive test methods to determine the in‐situ asphalt pavement layer density; and 3) If satisfactory nondestructive test methods are available and implementable, develop a Kentucky Test Method and describe the equipment and test method for inspectors.
