Every year approximately 27 000 pedestrians have to visit emergency care because of falls in the road environment. Using finite element analysis (FE) it is possible to analyse both kinematics and loads on human tissues. Inspired by the development in playground surfaces a development is taking place in the field of energy absorption in road and street paving. This project is expected to generate a better interpretation of causation mechanisms in pedestrian falls. The aim is to use anatomically based 3D-models of human bodies of adults and children, of different ages to predict injuries from external loads. Using detailed FE-models properties of surfaces and other protective equipment can be optimized to generate better protection.
