Mobile LIDAR, combines 3-D laser scanning, GPS, inertial measurement and video technologies to collect highly accurate data quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Multiple scanners are mounted on an SUV, a rail truck or a survey vessel. These scanners collect dense and accurate 360-degree data while the vehicle travels at posted speeds. The datasets can be repeatedly mined for information for a variety of transportation applications including clearances, asset location, inventory, slope stability, and many more. Currently, ARDOT uses conventional surveying techniques, as well as aerial photography to acquire their maps and datasets. In some instances, the department has utilized Static LIDAR scanners to generate models of bridges and other highway structures. The aforementioned techniques can be very time consuming and potentially dangerous. Mobile LIDAR offers a quicker, safer way to collect the same data, in some cases even better data.
This project will determine the Districts/Divisions/Sections within the Department that could benefit from the data produced by a mobile LiDAR system. Another objective is to investigate the feasibility of purchasing a mobile LiDAR system by ARDOT rather than contracting mobile LiDAR consultant services. Finally, this project will determine the additional resources required to facilitate the use of an in-house mobile LiDAR system. |
