Minnesota is the Lead Agency in the North/West Passage Transportation Pooled Fund Study (TPF-5(190)). The vision of the North/West Passage Corridor is to focus on developing effective methods for sharing, coordinating, and integrating traveler information and operational activities across state and provincial borders. The purpose of this project is to summarize the North/West Passage states' recent experience setting speed limits on Interstate highways, document how legislation and engineering have influenced speed limit decisions, and assess the impacts on safety, transportation efficiency, and needed enforcement of higher speeds and varying speed limits along the multistate corridor. The goals of this project are to: (1) document recent changes to Interstate highway speed limits within the North/West Passage states and summarize the legislative and engineering processes that were involved; (2) assess the impacts of higher speed limits and varying speed limits along the multistate North/West Passage corridor; and (3) document engineering, enforcement, and educational practices used by the North/West Passage states to manage speed limits and changes to them. |
