Safety in New York City (NYC) has improved greatly in the last 25 years, so much so that NYC is now the safest large United States (US) city. The NYC Pedestrian Safety Study and Action Plan of 2010 documents the programs that have been implemented (and the changes made through these programs) that have caused the significant improvement in safety statistics. It also states that the job is not done, as exemplified by the continued implementation of programs identified in the Plan.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has adopted a comprehensive plan called Vision Zero. Its aim is for zero traffic fatalities on the streets of NYC, with the philosophy that loss of life is unacceptable and preventable with safer designs for pedestrians and bicyclists, enforcement to slow down speeding vehicles, and stopping drivers from texting, among other things. The Vision Zero Action Plan, which can be found at http://www.nyc.gov/html/visionzero/pages/home/actions.html, lays the foundation for the various steps that will be taken by City agencies such as the New York City Police Department, the Transportation Departments, the Taxi & Limousine Commission, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and others. The Vision Zero approach to safer streets combines the strengths of different agencies working together. |
