Many of the top undergraduate students in transportation engineering apply for graduate school with little or no research experience. This lack of firsthand experience can effect a student's expectations and professional network. On the other hand, as one of the top transportation engineering programs in the U.S. the faculty and staff at the University of Maryland Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering actively recruit the top students in the field. To address this all too often shortcoming in transportation research, this proposal seeks to give undergraduate students from across the U.S. an opportunity to participate in a summer research program hosted at the University of Maryland, College Park. The proposed Undergraduate Summer Research Program will allow top ranked undergraduate students from across the U.S. to compete for three research positions with participating transportation faculty/research staff at the University of Maryland Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The specific research topics will be determined upon approval of this proposal. Recognizing the varying fields of expertise of the faculty/research staff at the University of Maryland, students will have the option to apply for specific research projects if they prefer. The final selection of awarded positions will be based on the academic merits and recommendations of the applicants, determined by NTC@Maryland Staff and the participating faculty/research staff member. |
