MARAD held the 2nd Annual Marine Transportation System (MTS) Short Sea Shipping Conference in Sarasota, Florida, November 4-6, 2003. The objective of the conference was to exchange industry knowledge and insight into new Short Sea Shipping technologies, and to develop viable Short Sea Shipping policy recommendations to help meet projected trade growth. The Conference brought together a broad representation of nearly 200 experienced leaders from the transportation industry and state and federal agencies, as well as representatives from Mexico, Canada and the Netherlands. Panel discussions included: Shipper Concerns on Near Coastal Trade - 'Will shippers use short sea services'; U.S. Shipyards, Shipbuilding and Technology - 'Can shipyards support the construction of competitively priced Short Sea Shipping vessels'; Landside Infrastructure and Labor -'What will be needed to facilitate new service'; and International Short Sea Shipping Progress. |
