The Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP) was formed between Ford and General Motors to accelerate the implementation of crash avoidance countermeasures in passenger cars to improve traffic safety. The CAMP partnership is engaged in cooperative research with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to advance the safety research objectives of the Department's Intelligent Vehicle Initiative. This report describes the progress made in the first year of this three-year cooperative research program. Progress in three projects is described in the report: Forward Crash Warning Requirements, Driver Workload Metrics, and Enhanced Digital Maps for Safety. The first project found that last-second steering occurred later than last-second braking in test track studies, thus raising concerns that using braking data alone to design a driver warning algorithm may lead to excessive nuisance alarms. The second project completed a literature review, analysis of potential metrics, and a draft experimental test design. The third project completed an identification of safety applications enabled or enhanced by advanced digital maps and determined application attribute requirements. |
