The effectiveness of Personal Computer-Based Aviation Training Devices (PCATDs) and Flight Training Devices (FTDs) to meet FAA recency of experience requirements for instrument flight are currently under investigation. Two types of training devices are being evaluated: a Jeppesen FS-200 PCATD and a Frasca 141 FTD. Instrument-current pilots received a baseline Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) in the airplane and were assigned to one of four groups: a PCATD Group, a FTD Group, an Airplane Group and a Control Group. Over a period of six months the pilots received recency of experience training in the respective training equipment. At the end of the six months period they received a final IPC. Data for 100 subjects are reported for the baseline IPC, and to date 89 pilots have completed the study. Observations on instrument-current pilots ability to pass the baseline IPC along with preliminary analysis of pass rates on the final IPC are presented. Only 43%of instrument pilots who were instrument current passed the baseline IPC and 55%of the pilots passed the final IPC. Performance on the baseline IPC was compared to performance on the final IPC. / NOTE: Technical rept. / Supplementary Notes: Presented at the NAFI-ERAU Conference, Oshkosh, WI., July 2000.
