Fugitive dust generated by motor vehicles on unpaved roads presents a significant health problem in southern Nevada and the southwestern United States. Disturbances of the fine dust of the desert region surrounding Las Vegas has resulted in special concern from the Environmental Protection Agency and a variety of methods have been used to decrease dust produced from man-made sources. Unpaved construction sites and unpaved roads traveled by commercial traffic require regular spraying with water and surfactants to decrease dust production as vehicles break the soil surface. In this study, an alternative technique was proposed to decrease fugitive dust produced by motor vehicles. This method uses flow control devices located on the surface of the vehicle to decrease the energy in the turbulent wake that is generated by the vehicle. By decreasing the size of the wake, the energy available to loft small dust particles into the atmosphere is decreased. An additional benefit of this technique is that less energy in the wake also equates to less aerodynamic drag on the vehicle. The results of the experiments used to validate this method of wake control have demonstrated significant decreases in the pressure variations in the wake with large decreases in drag force. The generation of fugitive dust by motor vehicles is well outlined by Chen, et al and the three phases of dust dynamics: generation, transport, and settling, are briefly discussed in the theory section that follows. Recent studies, such as Fitz, et al have concentrated on the development of new technology to detect the concentration and particle size in dust plumes. Fitz tested the viability of LIDAR, an optical technique. / Title Note: Final rept. / Supplementary Notes: Sponsored by Federal Highway Administration, Carson City, NV.
