According to Clarksons Research Services Limited (CRSL), mid of 2023, the global world merchant fleet comprised 50,287 merchant vessels of a combined 2.223 billion dwt, a year-on-year increase of 4.8% in terms of deadweight tonnage (merchant ships of 1,000 gt and over). The world shipping scene is dominated by a small number of shipping countries with regard to ship ownership and ship registration, respectively. Today, the top 10 shipping nations control about 71% of the world fleet's tonnage. Only 3 of these ten owner countries, namely China, Hong Kong SAR and Singapore, have less than three quarters of their fleet registered in a foreign country or open registry. Regarding flags of registration, 77% of the world's tonnage is foreign-flagged. A large share of the foreign-flag tonnage is using open registers. About 48.5% of the global transport capacity is attributable to only three open flag states (Liberia, Panama and the Marshall Islands), with the top three flags having increased their share of the global merchant fleet from 43% to 48.5% over the last five years. |
