Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) systems are a popular and economical option to construct retaining walls for highways and railways, wingwalls and abutments for bridges, and numerous other applications for public and private development. An MSE wall is comprised of alternating layers of fill and soil reinforcements. The reinforcement materials are generally made of galvanized steel or polymers (e.g., geosynthetics) and take the form of straps or continuous elements. MSE walls have a vertical or near-vertical face typically comprised of concrete panels or blocks, segmental blocks, or a wrapped-earthen face with or without welded-wire forms. Design and construction guidance for MSE walls and backfill specifications for MSE backfill are dependent on the MSE wall application and location. Entities including the Federal Highway Administrations National Highway Institute (NHI 2009) and the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA 2010) have published leading resources. |
