摘要: RAIL CARLOAD AND INTERMODAL VOLUMES in 2021 saw gains for both U.S. and North American movements, according to data issued in January by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). For calendar year 2021, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads-at 12,010,274-saw a 6.6% annual increase. Intermodal containers and trailers-at 14,142,442-rose 4.9% over 2020 and were up 3.4% over 2019, posting its best year since 2018's 14.47 million units. While carloads were up nearly 7% over 2020, which was significantly impacted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, AAR noted that they were off 7.4% compared to 2019. In the meantime, 16 of the 20 U.S. carload commodities tracked by AAR saw annual gains in 2021. A new annual record was set for chemical carloads, at 1.69 million, the byproduct of chemical companies having invested tens of millions of dollars in new capacity in recent years. Grain carloads-at 1.21 million-hit their highest level since 2008, and coal carloads saw a 10.9% increase, to 3.33 million, spurred on by higher natural gas prices through much of the year, making coal-based electricity generation more competitive.
