The trucking industry reported price cuts for three months in a row in the third quarter of 2022. This occurred thanks to inflation trends softening in the truckload market. With the numbers locked in, we now forecast the industry's average annual price escalation to stand at 21% by the end of 2022 before slipping to 4.2% in 2023. That's revised down from the 24% and 4.8% rates we had predicted in June. However, the backup of barges floating on the water-starved Mississippi could have a substitution effect on trucking, plus another COVID outbreak could swamp the forecasts and push prices higher again. We'll have to monitor the situation as more survey results come in. |
