THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY is usually a reliable early indicator of any economic slowdown affecting the economy. Well, that's usually the case. Here in late 2022, there are mixed signals emanating from the usual barrage of economic figures released by various sectors of the trucking industry. For example, the advanced seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index issued by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) rose 0.5% in September, for a reading of 118.8 (2015=100) following a 2.1 % August increase. "The latest gain put tonnage at the highest level since August 2019 and the third-highest level on record," said Bob Costello, chief economist at ATA. "This is another example of how the contract freight market remains strong despite weakness in the spot market this year. During the third quarter, tonnage increased 0.5% over the second quarter while increasing 5.6% over the same period in 2021. That was the largest quarterly year-over-year increase since the second quarter of 2018." |
