WHILE THE NEGOTIATIONS on a new contract between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) are set to begin this month, the ILWU's top executive expressed optimism that a new deal will come to fruition. The ILWU represents nearly 14,000 port workers in California, Oregon and Washington who handle more than 40% of U.S. incoming container traffic moving through West Coast ports, including the gateways of Los Angeles and Long Beach, according to industry estimates. The PMA represents shipping lines and terminal operators at 29 West Coast ports. |
