In the most dramatic reveal ever, the latest government surveys show average prices in the trucking industry jumped 21.3% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to a year earlier. Truckload companies reported a very sharp 8% monthly price hike in March, causing TL tags in the first quarter to soar 31.4% above year-ago levels. That was an astounding 5.5 points higher than the fourth quarter of 2021. At the same time, tanker and other special freight trucking also accelerated 15%, up 3.6 points. Meanwhile, LTL inflation slowed, but only to 13.3%. High fuel prices, labor shortages and strong freight demand make a return to more reasonable price trends unlikely any time soon. |
