ITE JOURNAL: In your current role as Chief, Office of Mobility Programs at Caltrans, what is a "day in the life" like for you? What types of projects might we find you working on and what sort of other professionals do you interact with? WANG: The Office of Mobility Programs (OMP) provides statewide leadership and innovation in terms of multimodal mobility policy, plans, guidance, and project reviews. In the past couple of years, we have developed and updated a series of policies, including Transportation System Management and Operations (TSMO), Ramp Metering, Managed Lanes, together with the associated design and operation guidelines. These guidelines help standardize transportation analysis to better inform the resource programming practices following the statewide Transportation Asset Management Plans (TAMP). For example, the Managed Lane policies will require equity analysis in managed lane projects. The Intersection Control and Evaluation (ICE) policy and process information guide facilitates the implementation of roundabout projects to improve traffic safety. Just recently, we have implemented person-delay as the performance measure in prioritizing and programming operational improvement projects that will advance multimodal inclusiveness. To accomplish these, we partner with all levels of governments, interested groups, consultants, the industry, as well as academic institutions and professional organizations, such as the ITE. |
